Dickson family papers, 1785-1879 (bulk 1785-1838, 1860-1864).

Business letters and legal papers, compositions, and correspondence, including one folder of Civil War letters. The oldest records trace the movement of the Hendricks and Smiths from Virginia to Franklin Co., GA. Jackson Co., GA, business papers belonged to James Orr, probably General Dickson's nephew. The Franklin College Board of Trustees minutes (1809) and two other early Georgia college catalogs are included. Mixed correspondence from Texas and from Henry and Newton Counties in Georgia covers 70 years. The Civil War letters were written during the Vicksburg Siege (1863) and leading up to the Atlanta Campaign (1864).

The Steele family papers include account books and diaries for several generations who lived in Pendleton, SC, and moved to Cherokee Co., GA, around 1860. James Steele was the uncle of Governor Joseph E. Brown and related to other figures in this collection.
